Background

Berrigan is a traditional small country town located 690 km south-west of Sydney, Australia. The Berrigan Channel is an irrigation canal that is part of a sizeable water-flow control system and receives water from the Mulwala Canal, the most extensive irrigation infrastructure in the Southern Hemisphere.

Challenge

The water-flow control system required modernisation to meet growing community demands. The renewal project demanded draining the irrigation channel and constructing new concrete walls, a rainfall harvesting system, and a gate structure that required completion during a limited shut-down period between seasons.

Solution

Geopanel, the reusable formwork system, was the perfect solution.

Its swift installation, lightweight, and modular design allowed for the creation of formwork of any size and shape without the need for cranes or other mechanical lifting devices.

It allowed the formation and pour of the entire structure in less than 5 days.

Outcome

The works were part of the Murray Irrigation Scheme and involved the construction of walls 2400 x 300mm and 350 mm thick.

Allcon assisted with the design and delivered 180 m2 of Geoplast Geopanel wall plastic formwork for concrete to build two “U”-shaped walls with channel returns and wing walls to suit the Rubicon gates.
