Geogrids are geosynthetic plastic grid used to reinforce and strengthen the subsoil. The open grid pattern of geogrid confines the soil/subgrade to the grid increasing the shear strength of the soil. It’s like snowshoes – no snowshoes and your boots sink into the snow, using snowshoes, the weight is dissapated across a larger area enabling the snow to support your weight. Geogrids are often used to strengthen base and subgrade to increase the bearing capacity in high load applications. The use of geogrids often reduces the amount of roadbase required to achieve the same loading.
